Mtt's been on vacation, so he hasn't had time to QC any of the chapters that have been put on his table the past two weeks. So, I had to prepare another quick release instead... but since I've marathoned a whole lot of shifts last week, I pushed back the release to today to maintain my sanity. I haven't proofread this summary, so please excuse any oopsies I may have left.
The third chapter features Kazuto getting confronted about hiding stuff from his friends, before he shares his idea for dealing with Mutasina's army.

ReplyDeleteAnyway, seeing as we're past the Fan Translated material in the LNs, I wanted to ask about what honorifics have been added. For instance, how does Asuna address Liten, Shivata, or Kizmel? Does Silica still pretty much always use "-san" with everyone? Or what about people who address Kirito with his "Blackie" nickname? It seems some use honorifics, but which one(s)?
So I'll be glad for what guidance you can provide on this.

Shivata - san. Checked PV4.
Kizmel - no honorifics, just Kizmel. Checked PV6.
P.S. You can find our translations of the Progressive manga on this very blog. I do keep all honorifics that the characters use.

So yes, she uses -san with pretty much everyone. She still speaks in teineigo with everyone too.

You're gonna need to give me specific instances to check. I'm not gonna go through all 26 volumes to look for instances of it. From the top of my head, I remember people using -san and -sensei with Blackie in older volumes.

DeleteI'll consider having a look at the manga translations. The main thing is, my (lack of) eyesight has always made manga, ahem, challenging.
I mean, the main examples of the "Blackie" nickname coming to mind just right off are from the middle of "Barcarolle" when Agil first brings it up, and then twice later on in "Scherzo", with the ALS scouts and then PoH.
To my knowledge, prior to Unital Ring at least, the "Blackie" nickname isn't used at all in the main series. I suppose Argo could tease Kirito with it, but she already has her own "Kii-bou" thing going on. And Klein, when he does do anything, has his whole "Kiri-no-jii" ("Kirito old boy"/"Kirito old man") bit.

DeleteIt actually first comes up in Mother's Rosario as "Blackie-sensei". Then it got added to Progressive.

That was actually Rondo, right before the boss battle when Agil invited Kirito and Asuna to his party. Kirito expressed concern about being a Beater; in turn, Agil claimed that only a handful of people were calling him that, while their own circle preferred a different nickname: 黒ずくめ or ブラッキー. Asuna took to the nickname (as ブラッキーさん), since it referred to お芝居の黒子 (drama stage assistants that were dressed in black in kabuki; an idiom for a behind-the-scenes supporter).
Barcarolle didn't have any instances of ブラッキー, as far as CTRL+F shows.
Scherzo had ブラッキーさん (6 instances) or just ブラッキー (1 instance, when the ALS team reaches the boss room)

Klein doesn't call him "old man". It's not "jii" (爺), it's キリの字 (Kiri-no-ji). It's some old-fashioned name-shortening thing from the Edo period or something used to refer to someone in a roundabout manner. Klein's just roleplaying a samurai.
Well, if those are our biggest problems, that's not doing so bad.
DeleteThere was a Reddit post a while back with what must have been the manga panel from that scene in "Rondo". I clearly had that somewhere in my mind, and then spotted the illustration in the middle of Progressive Volume 3.
Sheesh, the difference a letter makes ("ji" to "jii").
On top of that, it didn't come up when I searched "Caliber", but only in "Rainbow Bridge" and "Agil and Klein's Exciting Meal", that I've spotted so far.

DeleteIf you're referring to "Kiri-no-ji", it definitely was present in Calibur. Just that the translator (both for the fan translations and for Yen Press's translation) ignored it.
Yeah, when Klein is imploring Kirito about Freyja. The Klein vs Liz argument about samurai in games and magic usage wasn't in the LN, which was the first instance I was thinking of from the anime.
