[Project Announcement] Re:Aincrad

I've been hinting for a week or two that we've been working on a secret project... and now that I have some material to share, the time has come for us to officially announce what our project is. Introducing Sword Art Online: Re:Aincrad (ソードアート・オンライン リ・アインクラッド), the official reboot manga of the Sword Art Online first main story arc. You may recall that the manga adaptation of the first story arc had left... quite a lot to be desire, both in terms of art style, and story adaptation. Well, this manga sets out to fix both of these issues: the art is HD and the manga sets out to adapt stories that even the anime skipped over, so we're finally getting a manga adaptation of the First Day/Day of Beginnings (and possibly more, like the Sachi, Silica, and Lisbeth stories that the original manga outright skipped)!

Currently, two chapters for the manga are already out. The first chapter adapts the introduction to Sword Art Online... mostly based on the anime season 1 episode 1, rather than the novel, but that's still better than the original manga's shot at it. Meanwhile, the second chapter adapts the First Day/Day of Beginnings side story from volume 8. The end of chapter 2 teases Asuna, so we might get some Asuna focus in the third chapter? I do wonder how this manga will handle it, if it decides to take that path, but we'll have to wait till Christmas to find out! The manga gets new chapters on a monthly basis on the last Saturday of the month. Heck, I'm surprised that it's getting such frequent releases, considering that the first chapter is 80 pages long and chapter 2 is over 40... This should be a fun ride.

Anyway, typesetting for chapter 1 is already done, so we should be able to release it in the coming weeks. Chapter 2 is already in the works as well, so stay tuned!

  1. Nice! I totally skipped the first manga because of the art style, but this looks good! I've been waiting for a first day adaptation for a while too :D

  2. Oh, that's great you and your team are going to work on this! (I was actually going to ask if there's a plan to do that)

Concerning the first adaptation you mentioned... I actually quite enjoyed it (apparently I have low standards ), but wasn't it meant to be the adaptation of the first LN volume and not of the whole arc? That's why there's no Silica, Liz, etc.

    1. Yui wasn't in V1 either, yet her story was (sorta) adapted in the original manga, so...

Yeah, you're right. Shortly after I wrote this comment, I remembered that Yui was mentioned. It's almost only V1 adaptation then. ^^'
