[Progressive manga] Canon of the Golden Rule - Chapter 8

Heya, everyone. It's been a while since our last update. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to work on much of any translations the past month, despite my desire to get back in the game. A family member lost the fight to cancer this month, so translations were the last thing on my mind for a while... and having a shitty work schedule this month didn't help either.

Since I haven't been able to work on anything this month, the only stuff we had in stockipile were a couple of Canon of the Golden Rule chapters that I finished up way back in the middle of summer. So, Mtt didn't even have options to pick from this time. But Canon is 👌, so I'm not complaining.

Chapter 8 returns back to the bath for some unfinished dialogues, then continues with more dialogue in less intimate settings, before concluding the adaptation of Progressive volume 5 with the bed-sharing pinkie scene that everyone loves.

There are only two more chapters left to go, so I hope you savour these releases while they last. If you have any suggestions/requests for what to work on, feel free to leave a comment or contact us through Twitter/Discord/Email.

Translation (choice/nuance) comments:
  • Page 04: Japanese have two words that can be translated to the English word "hero". One of them is the more generic 英雄 (eiyuu), which literally means "great man". The other, used more commonly to refer to THE hero of the story is 勇者 (yuusha), which means "one with courage" or "the brave one". To differentiate between the two words, I decided to use "hero" for the former term and "The Brave" for the latter.
  • Page 04: Elves refer to humans as 人族 (jinzoku, lit. human race/tribe), just like how all the fantasy creatures/people in games use the -zoku suffix when talking about the creature/people species/race. I decided to translate this term as "humankin(d)" to account for this nuance, as I could easily apply -kin(d) to any other race to maintain consistency.
  • Page 04: "If my memory serves me right, didn't Selm the humankin brave" - Kizmel phrases this sentence as a question to herself, as if consulting her own memory and not being sure if she remembers it right.
  • Page 06: "Even this very castle accommodates one such storyteller." - Kizmel used a word from the honorific (sonkeigo) register, so I tried to phrase the sentence in a fancier manner. Kizmel continues to use various honorific phrases when talking about the storyteller in other panels as well.
  • Page 06: The word "beta" was written as the Greek letter β in the original text.
  • Page 07: "Considering your position, I can see how that would be a difficult question to answer." - this line wasn't in the original text and the manga doesn't exactly clarify what it hand in mind with it. I presume that Kizmel was referring to the fact that she's pretty old by human standards, so she's not one to judge "youthfulness", but the manga makes it almost sound like Kizmel can't badmouth her superiors or something. Since the intended meaning is left in the air, just interpret it as you wish, I guess. I left the translation ambiguous as a result.
  • Page 11: The mid-sentence question mark in parentheses was present as such in the original text.
  • Page 11: "down there" - this part of the line was emphasised in the original text with bouten (dots beside kanji). The question mark in parentheses was like that in the original text as well.
  • Page 13: "Inside the treasury on the fourth floor of the main building here." - this wasn't a complete sentence in the original text, so I left the sentence incomplete in the translation as well.
  • Page 23: "In… indeed, I must say that is a fine point to make…" - Kirito uses a word from the honorific (sonkeigo) register in this sentence, so I made his sentence sound fancier here.
  • Page 24: "Very well! Andastuddo!!" - the original text was "了解しました!アンダストゥド!!", where both words mean the same thing, but the former is in actual Japanese, while the latter is in katakanised English.
Adaptation notes:
  • In the novel, Asuna got caught up in listening to Kizmel's story, so she stopped shooting glares at Kirito every time he reflexively turned towards them.
  • The scene in the girls' changing room is a manga-original addition, but some of its dialogue is a modified version of the dialogue from the lounge scene in the novel. Instead of the girls putting on underwear, we got Kirito monologuing about their Aincrad bath incidents back in the novel. Also, Asuna stepped out of the changing room with a blissful smile and threw herself into oone of the rattan chaitrs in the lounge, rather than glaring daggers at Kirito.
  • In the novel, Kirito didn't reference that he didn't manage to ask his question in the novel. Instead, he just tacked it onto a random remark.
  • In the novel, Kirito remembered that elves can't stand desolate conditions before Kizmel explained it.
  • Kirito was the one who brought up the question of how Kizmel would reach the key on the 6th Floor.
  • Kirito's last lines on page 15 were part of Asuna's dialogue in the novel.
  • Kirito was supposed to hold out his left pinkie to Kizmel, not his right one.
  • Kizmel's reference to the 3rd Floor bath scene is a manga-original addition.
  • The manga skimmed over the dinner scene... although it was just a short narration in the novel too.
  • The novel didn't mention the bathroom. Kirito and Asuna just realised that there was only one door leading to a bedroom and that it contained a queen-sized bed, rather than going into different rooms and realising that only one of them was a bedroom.
  • The context of the pinkie bed scene has been changed. In the novel, Asuna was curious about how the harassment prevention code worked, so she decided to test Kirito's theory that touching someone who was sleeping would trigger the warning. Instead, the manga has Asuna thinking about how she wants to become Kirito's equal.
  • Various dialogue trimming and rephrasings.

  2. Did the physical release of episode 7 change anything? Mugetsu sensei said it was up to the editors if they decide to remove censorship.

    1. I haven't exactly compared the two releases in detail, but on a quick scan of the tankoubon's contents, I don't see much of any difference between it and the Twitter raws we worked from. At least, I didn't see any censorship changes. Kizmel's still butt naked, but Mist-kun's hiding her nipples and perineal area, for example.

  3. If you're taking requests for what to translate, I apologize if this is getting annoying, but I would like to request the rest of Clover's Regret.

    1. Unfortunately, I have been bogged down in real life the past few months. I've barely had any time to spare for manga projects, let alone side stories... so I definitely don't have it in me to work on full-blown light novel volumes for the time being. At least not until I catch up on stuff that I've been leaving lying in my drawers due to lack of time.
